Yes and no; medical students will spend more time observing health professionals with limited hands-on experience, however more qualified medical professionals will be afforded the opportunity to become more actively involved with treatments and patients.
For students, there is a supervisor (doctor or nurse) with them as they are doing their work. For doctors, they will be with their fellow doctors. This is a great opportunity for volunteers to become familiarized with the practices of Tanzanian hospitals. Many patients do not speak English; however the doctors and fellow medical staff can assist with translating. Our program coordinator will show the volunteers how to use public transportation to and from their placement as well.
Volunteers should come with their own scrubs and a stethoscope, if necessary. In addition, if volunteers are volunteering through an organization, school etc. They may bring any hospital supplies to the hospital in Tanzania they deem necessary. It is very helpful to the medical project if volunteers provide additional supplies.
Volunteers will reside with a host family or in Tamiha Volunteer House for the duration of their placement. There 6 projects that our volunteer shall rotate to get experience. The Tamiha Orphanage project,The Hospital Service Project, The Care and Support Project for HIV Women, The St Vivian School,The GOAT Project for Women and the Youth Girl Project area about 45 minutes away from the Tamiha House by way of public transportation called Daladala (Mini Bus). The extended duration is due to regular stops along the route. By taxi, the projects are 12 minutes. Long-term volunteers tend to rent bicycles from the House and use them as their means of transportation during their visit. Renting a bicycle is 20$ a week which also revolve for the Tamiha Orphanage.
The Tamiha House is located in Arusha Town nearly 30 km from the Kilimanjaro International Airport. This is a perfect home for volunteers compared to other volunteer bases in town. With confortable bedrooms, hot shower, beautiful gardens where you can enjoy quietness to read, the availability of the coffee shop, the beautiful restaurant, the inside bar, Wi-Fi, Rooms with international news channels that takes you back home, Western Style Toilets with running water in the shower rooms, Electric fenced gates, the CCTV cameras everywhere and the Maasaiguides in Maasai warrior dresses. This will make you relax after the long day volunteering activities. In the evening when you return to Tamiha House, you can relax, eat dinner, explore local areas or simply share experience with volunteer comrades. Our Volunteer House has single, double and Triple bed rooms where volunteers choose to stay and share with same gender if necessary.
In some cases, depending on the number of volunteers, distance to a volunteer's assigned project, we may arrange the placements for our volunteers to the host families. These are well behaved and safer families that have vast experience with hosting international volunteers. Here volunteers will share rooms in same gender manner. The placement in homestays aims at helping volunteers to learn and share cultures. The program coordinator and local staffs will visit the host homes at least every weekend to stay posted.
Some of our volunteers are placed at Tamiha Orphanage Home where they experience a direct touch with the children. This placement aim at bringing volunteers closer to the children and understand children behaviors for the better working together.
Our Tanzanian teaching English program is with primary schools, students range from 5-12-years-old. On occasion, there are older students who are repeating classes due to failure in passing, in which case they are redoing the same courses from the previous year.
You will expect about 25-45 pupils in the class
Yes, there is a syllabus and books that all schools follow. Volunteers shall follow this syllabus too while preparing teaching lessons and materials.
The schools have some few materials, however if a volunteer would like to bring additional teaching materials, that would be highly welcomed. If you have laptops that you or a neighbor wants to waste, it might be very useful here because schools don’t have computers to teach on.
Teaching English in Tanzania is available year-round, apart from public holidays. Even during school breaks, there are students that go for extra studies.
The school year in Tanzania runs from early January though late June and early July through early December. Holidays are for about one month, but students still come to study during those holidays.
We like to encourage volunteer teacher to come with books, pencils, pens and other supplies instead of buying them here. It is often more affordable to bring supplies rather than buying them.
