  • WHAT TYPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK CAN I DO?

  • WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO VOLUNTEER WITH US?

    Every volunteer is useful.No so special requirements,a volunteer speaking international languages such as English, Spanish, French and Germany will be useful in teaching languages to specific youth groups and schools. You need a clean criminal background, readiness to volunteer and a willingness to learn. Any educational background will fit somewhere in our community. Volunteers with specific volunteer requirements such as internship, or working in hospitals these might need to submit proofs of their education backups.

  • CAN I VOLUNTEER WITH A FRIEND(S) OR A PARTNER?

    Yes, friends and couples are welcome to volunteer together.We ensure couples or friends same accommodation and in some cases same project placements if necessary.So during the application please let us know that applicants are couples/friends.

  • CAN WE VOLUNTEER AS A FAMILY?

    Yes, we have considered all these situations. At our volunteer house we have a family like home whereby a family can stay. As usual when filling in the volunteer forms just let us know that you are family.

  • CAN CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 18 VOLUNTEER WITH TAMIHA?

    Yes we believe children will be always accompanied by their parents or adults. Imagine of a young child with a parent or a minder volunteering at the Orphanage Center? It will be a child to child touch and a lot to share and learn.

    Volunteering concept is above skills we share to community, it also involves sentiments, love, passion and caring, things that children carry in abundant Tamiha promotes children accompanying adults to volunteer. From our experience we do not restrict children to come to volunteer with their parents.

  • CAN I VOLUNTEER WITH A GROUP OF STUDENTS, COLLEAGUES OR FRIENDS?

    Sure, we understand universities, Colleges, Schools and Corporates have special volunteering requirements. They need special schedules, they need to develop, they need to achieve academic requirements, they need to face challenges, and they need to record academic observations. Achieve their academic or professional goals. In this case we have an experience with working with these groups and we place them in the project that suits their need.

  • IS TAMIHA A CHARITY? DO YOU ACCEPT DONATIONS?

    Tamiha is a charity Organization registered in Tanzania with a Charity No. 00002079. We work to change the lives of Orphan children, Street Children and Women Living with HIV/AIDS. We receive donations and they are not taxed by our government. So we encourage volunteers before or after volunteering to fundraise for Tamiha and choose the project to support.

  • CAN PEOPLE FROM ANY PART OF THE WORLD VOLUNTEER WITH TAMIHA?

    Of course, we invite volunteers from all over the world and accommodate people of all nationalities and races. We have worked with about 450 volunteers from different parts of the world.

  • CAN I TAKE AN INTERNSHIP WITH TAMIHA?

    Yes Internships are open. In case you need structured internship or special programs just send us the details and we will assure you the proper and relevant placement.

  • HOW CAN I VOLUNTEER WITH TAMIHA?

    Just visit our website, and establish the communication after you are sure we fit your volunteer requirements. Go to our volunteer page and fill in the Volunteer form and send it through our booking@tamiha.org here we start. Then you will pay the registration fees to confirm your booking. At least 3 weeks before arrival you are required to pay half of volunteer fees as shown in the price list. The rest of the fee shall be paid on arrival. We will keep you updated until we meet at the airport to pick you up. Our volunteer opportunities are all year round and you can book any date of the year according to your work and yearly schedules. We will finally send you the Program guide that tells you everything about your volunteering.

  • CAN I MAKE CHANGES TO MY APPLICATION IF I CHANGE MY MIND?

    Yes, you can easily change before registering. After registering please send us the email to organize the changes.

  • IS THERE A DISCOUNT FOR RETURNING VOLUNTEERS?

    Yes our volunteers who decide to return to volunteers at Tamiha are given a discount. They register for free. This is just a motivation and mostly a complimentary.

  • DO I REQUIRE A VISA TO TRAVEL TO TANZANIA?

    We are arranging volunteer placements only for volunteers who come to Tanzania.So you will need Visa to come to Tanzania.For the Visa requirements please visit or contact your nearest Tanzania embassy or let us know how to help. Also you will need the work permit after arrival. This shall cost 200$ for class C Volunteer permit. This is apart from the volunteer fees we charge.

  • WHICH VACCINATIONS WILL I REQUIRE?

    The vaccinations you require will depend on which vaccinations you have had previously. The only vaccination legally required in Tanzania is Yellow Fever. You can be vaccinated prior or during the arrival at entry point.

  • DO I NEED TO BE ABLE TO SPEAK THE LOCAL LANGUAGE?

    Volunteers are generally only required to speak English to participate in our program. TAMIHA volunteers are provided with basic language lessons during their orientation and we recommend that volunteers take additional language lessons where available. The more you can speak and converse in the local language, SWAHILI the more you will be able to immerse yourself into the program and local culture. But don’t worry, this should not shock you, we had an experience of working with volunteers who could not even speak English and still they could participate immensely.

  • WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE TO MY PROGRAM DESTINATION?

    When you arrive to your program destination, you will be greeted at the airport (or a local pick-up point if you are traveling overland) by a representative of our local team. They will take you to the volunteer accommodation and introduce you to your new home away from home, your local hosts and fellow volunteers. Before beginning your volunteer placement, you will attend a program orientation which is hosted by the local team to give you an introduction to the local culture and customs, safety advice, transport options, rules and expectations, your placement, and weekend travel opportunities. Our local team are available 24/7 to provide support to you during your volunteer program, so whether you are traveling solo or with a group of people, you know you will always be well looked after.

  • WHAT IS THE ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS LIKE?

    The Tamiha House is your home away from home. Your placement might be at Tamiha House or at our local home stays.The only thing to be assured is you will enjoy the stay and life time memories to follow. The meals are organized according to the local menus, wonderful and delicious. We also have professional chefs who can make your back home cousin if you come to miss it.

  • CAN I TAKE LANGUAGE LESSONS ON MY VOLUNTEER PROGRAM?

    Yes we conduct Swahili lesson at Tamiha House. Volunteers are paying the lesson from their out pockets but with affordable rates. It depends to the number of lessons and hours you will choose to learn.

  • CAN I GO TRAVELING AND SEE ADVENTURES DURING THE WEEKENDS OF MY VOLUNTEER PROGRAM?

    Tamihavolunteers will have free time and weekends available to explore more of the beautiful country,with world wonders, Tanzania.This might include arranging to climb Mountain Kilimanjaro,Visiting the Ngorongoro Crater,Serengeti and see migration of animals. Visit various National Parks including Manyara,Tarangire and Arusha. You can also visit different cultural tourism sites and enjoy the Maasai tribe wonders. Tamiha will arrange the tour trips for you at affordable volunteer prices by connecting you with a local Safari Company, JETLAND SAFARIS, a dedicated safari company that has offered 10% of her profits to our charity work. Just let us know your budgets and make you enjoy the nature. You can also see the suggested prices for Tamiha volunteers from www.jetlandsafaris.com. We understand that many of our volunteers wish to visit and experience sites like regular travelers too. So we made a deal with JETLAND SAFARIS for our volunteers.

  • DO YOU OFFER A CERTIFICATE AFTER COMPLETING MY VOLUNTEER PROGRAM?

    A CERTIFICATE OF VOLUNTEERING shall be offered to you after completion of your volunteering at Tamihawhich reflects the date and duration of your volunteer program. We understand the value you have put into our communities but also we want you be recognized by employers that you made the difference in this world.

  • WHAT IS THE SCHEDULE WHEN I WORK WITH HOSPITAL SERVICE PROJECT?

    Volunteers generally report to their assigned hospital at 8:30-am. As a Hospital Service Project volunteer in Tanzania, you can expect to work until 1.30 pm with a lunch break around 1 pm for a total of 5-7 hours daily Monday to Friday. The activities will include helping doctors and nurses to keep patients record, Assist with minor operations, Blood pressure measurements, Pediatric work, Labor ward ,Psychiatric unit, Dental unit, attending in operation rooms on special occasions, measuring weights,distributing drugs, observations of patient temperatures, cleaning patients wards, general cleanliness of the hospital. The day working plan is given after arrival at hospital on daily basis.

  • TYPICAL DAY SCHEDULE FOR HELPING AT THE HOSPITAL MONDAY TO FRIDAY:

    • 8.30am -9:00 am ~ Volunteers arrive at Hospital

    • 8:00am -12:30am~ Volunteers will be appointed for a department to work on today

    • 12:30am-1:30am~Lunch Break, volunteers will leave the hospital for lunch

  • WHAT IS THE SCHEDULE WHEN I WORK WITH THE TAMIHA ORPHANAGE HOME?

    Volunteers scheduled to work with Tamiha Orphanage Home will arrive at the Orphanage at 9am and work up to 3:30pm.This is Monday to Friday. The activities at the Orphanage include cleaning the house, laundry, cooking breakfast and lunch for the children, washing dishes, arrangements and decorating of children rooms, teaching basic Math, English, Hand Writing and Reading to kindergarten children, Teaching Music, Painting and Building, Establishing or maintaining the vegetable garden, taking children to train on swimming. During orientation the volunteer is given the printed out activities to perform depending on how long he or she stays.

  • TYPICAL DAY SCHEDULE FOR HELPING AT TAMIHA ORPHANAGE HOME FROM MONDAY TO FRIDAY:

    • 8.30am -9:00am Volunteers report at the Orphanage. Distributed for various works

    • :00am -10:00am ~ Volunteers teach Math/Reading/Handwriting/Drawing/Story Telling

    • 10:00am -10:30am ~Break,volunteers cook and serve porridge and snacks to pupils

    • 10:30am -12:30pm ~ Volunteers teach Math/Reading/Handwriting/Drawing/Story Telling

    • 12:30pm -1:30pm ~ Volunteers cook and serve the lunch to children/lunch break activities

    • 1:30pm - 3:00pm ~ Volunteers help children to nappy

    • 3:00 pm -310pm  ~ Volunteers train and play games/sports with children

    • 3:10pm -3.30pm ~ Volunteers picked up to the house / homestay

  • WORKING WITH CARE AND SUPPORT PROJECT FOR WOMEN LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS:

    Volunteers working with the HIV project will start at 9.30am to visit families of women. The activities involve visiting women at homes, provision of humanitarian assistance like food, clothes, medical support, repairing  their poor shelters/houses, training women groups, cleaning and fumigation of women homes, The day is about 5 hours long where volunteers will be driven back to the house for the rest of the day. This project works hand in hand with the GOAT PROJECT FOR THE WOMEN which aims to raise income for the Women Living with HIV/AIDS. Volunteers working with this project will visit the goat project and help on duty woman to feed the goats, clean the shed and search feeders for the goats. Thanks to the American Volunteer, A veterinary with big heart, DrKorrin Lucas for introducing and funding this project.

  • TYPICAL DAY SCHEDULE FOR WORKING WITH CARE AND SUPPORT PROJECT TUESDAY AND THURSDAY:

    • 9.00am-10.00am~ Volunteers/WOD work at the Goat Project to find feeders and feed

    • 10.00am -10:30 am ~ Volunteers visit Women Families. This Day 5/40 families selected

    • 10:30am -12:00am~ Volunteers will distribute foods, clothing, soaps to families/or training

    • 12:00am-1:30am~Volunteers are picked up to the house/ homestay for lunch

  • WORKING WITH YOUTH GIRLS PROJECT:

    Volunteers will be at the Youth Girls Center at 9am ready for teaching. The activities involve teaching languages to girls, teaching Computer Application and Software, Photographing, life Skills; participate in environmental campaigns like planting trees and garbage management. Volunteers will be leaving for the Tamiha House at 1.am

  • TYPICAL DAY SCHEDULE FOR WORKING AT YOUTH GIRL PROJECT MONDAY TO FRIDAY:

    • 7.30am -8:00 am ~ Volunteers report to the Girls Project Center.

    • 8:00am -10:00am~ Volunteers will teach Computers/Languages/Music/Photographing

    • 10:00am-10:30am~School Break, volunteers share snacks with girls

    • 10:30am-12:30pm~Volunteers will teach Computers/Languages/Music/Photographing

    • 12:30pm-1:30pm ~ Volunteers will be picked up for lunch at Tamiha House / homestay.

  • DO WE GET HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE AT THE HOSPITAL SERVICE PROJECT?

    Yes and no; medical students will spend more time observing health professionals with limited hands-on experience, however more qualified medical professionals will be afforded the opportunity to become more actively involved with treatments and patients.

  • WHAT TYPE OF SUPPORT DO VOLUNTEERS RECEIVE DURING THE HOSPITAL SERVICE PROJECT?

    For students, there is a supervisor (doctor or nurse) with them as they are doing their work. For doctors, they will be with their fellow doctors. This is a great opportunity for volunteers to become familiarized with the practices of Tanzanian hospitals. Many patients do not speak English; however the doctors and fellow medical staff can assist with translating. Our program coordinator will show the volunteers how to use public transportation to and from their placement as well.

  • IS THERE ANY OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE HOSPITAL SERVICE PROJECT?

    Volunteers should come with their own scrubs and a stethoscope, if necessary. In addition, if volunteers are volunteering through an organization, school etc. They may bring any hospital supplies to the hospital in Tanzania they deem necessary. It is very helpful to the medical project if volunteers provide additional supplies.

  • WHERE DO I STAY? HOW FAR IS THE PROJECT FROM THE ACCOMMODATION? HOW DO I COMMUTE?

    Volunteers will reside with a host family or in Tamiha Volunteer House for the duration of their placement. There 6 projects that our volunteer shall rotate to get experience. The Tamiha Orphanage project,The Hospital Service Project, The Care and Support Project for HIV Women, The St Vivian School,The GOAT Project for Women and the Youth Girl Project area about 45 minutes away from the Tamiha House by way of public transportation called Daladala (Mini Bus). The extended duration is due to regular stops along the route. By taxi, the projects are 12 minutes. Long-term volunteers tend to rent bicycles from the House and use them as their means of transportation during their visit. Renting a bicycle is 20$ a week which also revolve for the Tamiha Orphanage.

  • WHERE IS THE VOLUNTEER HOUSE LOCATED?

    The Tamiha House is located in Arusha Town nearly 30 km from the Kilimanjaro International Airport. This is a perfect home for volunteers compared to other volunteer bases in town. With confortable bedrooms, hot shower, beautiful gardens where you can enjoy quietness to read, the availability of the coffee shop, the beautiful restaurant, the inside bar, Wi-Fi, Rooms with international news channels that takes you back home, Western Style Toilets with running water in the shower rooms, Electric fenced gates, the CCTV cameras everywhere and the Maasaiguides in Maasai warrior dresses. This will make you relax after the long day volunteering activities. In the evening when you return to Tamiha House, you can relax, eat dinner, explore local areas or simply share experience with volunteer comrades. Our Volunteer House has single, double and Triple bed rooms where volunteers choose to stay and share with same gender if necessary.

     

    In some cases, depending on the number of volunteers, distance to a volunteer's assigned project, we may arrange the placements for our volunteers to the host families. These are well behaved and safer families that have vast experience with hosting international volunteers. Here volunteers will share rooms in same gender manner. The placement in homestays aims at helping volunteers to learn and share cultures. The program coordinator and local staffs will visit the host homes at least every weekend to stay posted.

     

    Some of our volunteers are placed at Tamiha Orphanage Home where they experience a direct touch with the children.This placement aim at bringing volunteers closer to the children and understand children behaviors for the better working together.

  • WHAT IS THE AGE RANGE OF THE STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOL?

    Our Tanzanian teaching English program is with primary schools, students range from 5-12-years-old. On occasion, there are older students who are repeating classes due to failure in passing, in which case they are redoing the same courses from the previous year.

  • HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE IN THE SCHOOL? HOW MANY OF THEM ARE IN EACH CLASS?

    You will expect about 25-45 pupils in the class

  • DO THEY HAVE TEACHING CURRICULUM?

    Yes, there is a syllabus and books that all schools follow. Volunteers shall follow this syllabus too while preparing teaching lessons and materials.

  • DO I NEED TO BRING TEACHING MATERIALS? OR DOES THE SCHOOL HAVE TEACHING

    MATERIALS FOR ME TO USE?

    The schools have some few materials, however if a volunteer would like to bring additional teaching materials, that would be highly welcomed. If you have laptops that you or a neighbor wants to waste, it might be very useful here because schools don’t have computers to teach on.

  • IS TEACHING AVAILABLE YEAR-ROUND? WHEN WILL IT CLOSE AND FOR HOW LONG?

    Teaching English in Tanzania is available year-round, apart from public holidays. Even during school breaks, there are students that go for extra studies.

    The school year in Tanzania runs from early January though late June and early July through early December. Holidays are for about one month, but students still come to study during those holidays.

  • IS THERE ANY OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION YOU WANT TO SHARE ABOUT THIS PROJECT?

    We like to encourage volunteer teacher to come with books, pencils, pens and other supplies instead of buying them here. It is often more affordable to bring supplies rather than buying them.
